Tanguy's Sebring Spin
Sebring · race, lap 33 · session clock 1:05:33 · from Marcus's recording

Tanguy Billon #4 spun by the #43 Cadillac he had just passed

Left: what the overlay's virtual spotter would have shown in Tanguy's car, drawn by the overlay's own spotter code. Right: an overhead of the same seconds. Gaps along the track come from the recording. Lateral positions and the rotation of the spin are illustrative.

What the recording shows

  • Billon closed from 6 m behind and drew level at 1:05:30.2 through the left-hander, then led by 3.8 m at the exit with the cars still overlapping.
  • At 1:05:33 he dropped from 130 to 51 km/h in two and a half seconds. His steering went to about 300° of left lock, and his engine fell to 1,089 rpm.
  • The Cadillac was off track from 1:05:33.2 to 1:05:35.9, rejoined ahead, and was 80 m clear ten seconds later.

How the spotter was simulated

  • real codeThe overlay's spotter engine (v0.8.268) was run on the recording with Tanguy's car as the player car. The spotter drawn here is the overlay's own renderer, fed those snapshots.
  • inferrediRacing only reports which side a car is on for the car the recording came from (Marcus's #3). For Tanguy's car the side is not in the file. Here the sim is assumed to call the Cadillac on his right whenever the two cars overlapped.
  • Select Not called to see what the spotter draws when the sim gives no side: a faint mark on both rails.

Why the right-hand side

  • He made the pass on the inside of a left-hander, which puts the Cadillac on his right.
  • Right after contact the Cadillac left the track, and the corner exit runs out to the right.
  • Full left lock means his rear was pushed to the left, which matches a hit on the right rear. The overhead's clockwise spin follows from this. How far he rotated is not recorded.
